Critical Analysis of Modernism Poems by Ted Hughes

Literary modernism, or modernist literature, has its origins in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, mainly in Europe and North America. Modernism is characterized by a self-conscious break with traditional styles of poetry and verse. Modernists experimented with literary form and expression, adhering to Ezra Pounds maxim to Make it new. The modernist literary movement was driven by a conscious desire to overturn traditional modes of representation and express the new sensibilities of their time. The horrors of the First World War saw the prevailing assumptions about society reassessed such as Sigmund Freud questioned the rationality of mankind. Few people have really attempted this getting inside an animals head like Hughes did - one rare other person is Les Murray, in Translations from the Natural World, which would give you a point of reference away from Hughes or Plath. And of course Sylvia herself was also a great nature poet, with her own specialised knowledge of natural history (her father was an expert beekeeper). So theres no way to reduce this to a handful of formulae, Im afraid. Theres much more in the poem than Ive touched on, and you really need to have a basic grasp of Ted and Sylvias relationship, and how Ted responded to her death (especially in Birthday Letters, and in the poem that surfaced late last year specifically about the night of her suicide - it got blanket coverage in the British media when Melvyn Bragg unearthed it.) Its also pretty much impossible to address all these issues without addressing the continuing debate over Teds responsibility for and response to Sylvias death. The template/sample can be found in the appendix, as well as all the results summarized by Google Form. 20 people took the survey in a lapse time of 5 days between October 12 and October 17. The survey suggested that half of the surveyed had a Bachelor’s degree and 75% of them are single, never married. Most of them (65%) had between 18 and 24 year old and took the survey via social media. The other category mostly represented (20%) was between 45 and 54 year old and took the survey sent my email. Knowing that most of the person who answered the survey was in the young generation I will focus my analysis on them. It is interesting to get to know more about their own perception of media. They haven’t lived the transition between traditional media and digital media like the other older generation did. They have an all-new look on media but still do not trust them. Only 25% of the surveyed answer â€Å"social media† to the question â€Å"Please choose a media outle t you think is the most trustworthy  ». The Generation Y should trusts the tools they use the most but surprisingly, for them the trustworthiest outlets were Newspaper and radio with 30%. People mostly trust radio and newspaper but still, 55% of them choose social media to access current news on the daily basis. The question here is; why do people go on media they don’t trust? I joined this group as a freshman because I had worked with childrenwith Down Syndrome during the eighth grade at Central Middle School. Myinterest carried on through out the years because of the numerous fun times Ihave had, and have made friends with many of the girls. They are all verypersonable and pleasant to talk with. They each have special characteristicsdefining them from the others, making each of them special in different ways,just like the rest us. Aside from the meetings that we have every so often to discussactivities we can do, we usually do fun and interesting activities. We go outfor pizza frequently because it seems to be the group consensus on what we wouldall like to eat. During the holidays we celebrate in interesting ways; onHalloween we have a party where every one gets dressed and brings candy. Forthe Christmas season we are going to celebrate with a party at a members houseand listen to Christmas carols, and have dinner. We have had bake sales andhave sold candy in order to raise money for the clubs activities. These areusually a success because every one participates and we all seem to functionwell as a group. When there are dances or football games at school we each takeone of the girls and its good for them because they get to interact with therest of the school at a big function. This club is not only fun, but its like going to a meeting with some ofyour friends. We are a small group and we all get along. Since we are a smallgroup it is also difficult for us to do a lot of things. It is difficult toeducate the larger part of the public who doesnt know what these kids are like. It is also hard to raise money to do many activities. It would be great if morekids would join each year, and it would be great if the ignorance level hadlowered. Many students just dont want to know anything of these kids. I choseto discuss G.A.R.C. because it is a group that could use help from the communityat Greenwich high, and I thought I could help by explaining exactly what we do. Why talk about something else, when I could tell of something I enjoy and thatneeds more attention.
